FAQ

What is tallow?

Tallow is a rendered form of beef fat that has been used for generations as a natural skin moisturizer. When properly rendered and purified, it becomes a clean, nutrient-rich balm that closely resembles the natural oils found in human skin.

Tallow is known for being deeply moisturizing, gentle, and well-tolerated by many people with sensitive or reactive skin.

Why use tallow on the skin?

Tallow contains naturally occurring fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins that help support the skin’s moisture barrier. Because its composition is similar to our own skin oils, many people find it absorbs well without feeling greasy.

Our customers often use tallow balms for:

  • dry or cracked skin

  • sensitive or easily irritated skin

  • lips, hands, feet, and elbows

  • beards and facial hair

Does tallow smell like beef?

No. When tallow is properly rendered and purified, it does not smell like meat. Our balms have a very mild, clean scent. Some products are left unscented for sensitive skin, while others contain light natural scents.

Is your tallow balm safe for sensitive skin?

Yes. We offer a sensitive skin balm made without added fragrance, designed for those who prefer the simplest formula possible. Many customers with easily irritated skin choose this option.

As with any skincare product, we recommend doing a small patch test first.

Are your products made in clean, sanitary conditions?

Absolutely. All of our products are:

  • made in small batches

  • prepared using sanitized tools and equipment

  • packaged in amber glass jars that are cleaned and sanitized before filling

Cleanliness and care are very important to us.

Why do you use amber glass jars?

Amber glass helps protect the product from light exposure, which can affect quality over time. Glass is also non-reactive and keeps the balm fresh without leaching into the product.

Are your products edible?

While tallow is technically food-grade, our products are made for cosmetic use only and are not intended to be eaten.

Do your products contain preservatives?

No. Our tallow balms are anhydrous (they contain no water), which means they do not require preservatives. This allows us to keep the ingredient list very simple.

How should I store my tallow balm?

Store your balm in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat. Because tallow is a natural product, it may soften in warm temperatures and firm up in cooler ones — this is normal and does not affect quality.

How long do your products last?

When stored properly, our tallow balms have a long shelf life. Because they contain no water, they are naturally stable. For best quality, we recommend using within 12–18 months.

Are your products handmade?

Yes. Everything we sell is handmade in small batches by John and Mireille. We believe in quality over quantity and take pride in every jar that leaves our hands.

Where can I buy your products?
